ELECTION 2006 - CONSERVATISM IS ALIVE
AND WELL
By: Trent (All rights reserved)
Election Day 2006 has come and gone and as we all know the Democrats have taken back control of the House.
Senate control, as I write this, has not yet been decided.  I wrote an editorial not long ago predicting the
Republicans would keep both the House and the Senate and obviously I was at least half wrong.  If you look at
the various results throughout the nation though, there was not a repudiation of conservative ideals.  Quite the
contrary.  In many states, conservative ballot initiatives passed overwhelmingly.  Initiatives such as bans on gay
marriage, severely limiting eminent domain powers, making English the official language, preventing illegal aliens
from participating in many programs have all passed.  If you look at the new Democrats that were elected, a large
number of them are much more conservative than the Democratic leadership.  Conservatism is alive and well in
America.  It's the Republican party that suffered the losses not the conservative agenda.  This election was greatly
impacted by voters views on the war in Iraq.  I happen to support the war in Iraq and it's objective, but obviously
many voters do not.  The war in Iraq according to most polls was either the number one or number two reason
people voted the way they did.  Therefore, many issues which are normally on the front burner took a back seat to
this one issue.  If you listen to the voters in this election, one thing is clear.  The Democrats did not win this
election.  The Republicans lost this election.  This is not opinion.  It is fact.  Voters in states where the Democrats
picked up seats were asked if they were supporting the Democrat candidate or voting against the Republican.
The majority of people responded that they were voting against the Republican.  The Democrats were not running
on a series of views like the Republicans did in 1994.  They basically ran on the slogan of "Hey we are not the
Republicans and we want to get out of the war."   Many of the voters connected with the anti-Iraq policy and
forgot about the other issues of the day.  Our economy is thriving.  Taxes are lower.  Home ownership is at record
levels.  Unemployment is extremely low.  The Dow is at record levels.  All of which are due to conservative
initiatives.  Liberalism did not win this election for the Democrats.

I am not looking at the world through rose colored glasses.   This is clearly a setback for Republicans.  However,
this site is not ProudRepublican.com.  It is ProudConservative.com.  And this nation and it's citizenship has proven
that we remain a strong conservative population.  I am not predicting gloom and doom for America because of this
election.  Whether the Democrats or the Republicans are in control, the United States of America is still the
greatest nation on Earth.

Oh....almost forgot.  See you later Senator Chafee.  Don't let the door hit you on the way out.
