WHOOPI DOESN'T UNDERSTAND THE CONSTITUTION
Whoopi Goldberg made a complete fool of herself on The View last week. The guest on the show was Sen. John McCain. They were all having a conversation about Roe vs. Wade and the types of judges McCain would nominate for the Supreme Court. Sen. McCain stated, "My interpretation of the Constitution of the United States is that the United States Supreme Court enforces the Constitution of the United States and does not legislate nor invent areas that are responsibilities, according to the Constitution, of the legislative branch."
Very shortly after that comment, this is the exchange that Whoopi Goldberg had with John McCain:
GOLDBERG: "Can you just, and I don’t want to misinterpret what you’re saying. Did you say you wanted strict Constitutionalists? Because that, that-"
McCAIN: "No, I want people who interpret the Constitution of the United States the way our founding fathers envision-"
GOLDBERG: "Does that-"
McCAIN: "-for them to do."
GOLDBERG: "Should I be worried about being a slave, about being returned to slavery? Because certain things happened in the Constitution that you had to change."
Of course, the audience started cheering and everyone thought that Whoopi was so brilliant.
Here's the problem. The Constitution already abolished slavery. A strict constitutionalist judge would follow the Constitution and obviously, Whoopi would have nothing to worry about. There is very little in the Constitution about slavery with the exception of the 3/5 rule. However, most people are ignorant of the fact that the 3/5 rule was not a racist rule that counted slaves only as 3/5 of a person because of bigotry. The 3/5 rule was inserted by anti-slavery advocates because it gave the slave states less representation in Congress and therefore less power. For good measure and clarity, the 13th Amendment officially abolished slavery in the United States. Amendments are part of the Constitution. Whoopi should study up on the Constitution a little before making such silly remarks.
