WHEREVER YOU ARE IN LIFE, THAT'S WHERE YOU WANT TO BE
I have to admit, this is one of my favorite ways to start a debate or discussion. Try it sometime. Start a conversation by saying, "Wherever you are in life, that's where you want to be." It's a true statement. This is America. In America, you can be whatever you want to be and be as successful as you want or be. Usually the statement I get back right away is this, "Well, I want to be a millionaire and I'm not." My next statement in the discussion is, "What have you done or what are you doing to make that happen?" Life is full of choices. Every decision you make affects where you are in life and where you will be in life. If you want to be a millionaire, great. Do something about it. Buying a lottery ticket works for a few, but not most of us. Start a business. Further your education. Make some investments. Do something.
"It costs money to start a business and I can't afford it." Stop buying meals out. Stop renting movies. Stop buying cds. Or whatever else you may be splurging on. There are so many businesses that can be started for under $500.00 that anyone who really wants to start one...can. "I don't have time to go back to college." Make time. I know people who work 60-80 hours a week and go to college full time. "That doesn't sound like fun." It's not! But they are doing something to better themselves. "I don't know how to invest." Learn. Read books. Find sites on the internet to learn about investing. Do something. This doesn't only apply to monetary concerns. "I want to be happy." What are you doing to be happy? Some people find happiness in Church. Go to Church. Some find happiness in great friendships. Do your friends make you happy or do you talk about them (and vice-versa) behind their backs? Do they kill your dreams when you talk about them. Find some new friends. "I want to be a pro football player." Well if you're in your forties, it isn't going to happen. But if that was your goal when you were in High School, did you practice as hard as you could? Did you eat as well as you could have? Did you learn from your mistakes? Did you watch tapes of great players to see what they all had in common? Answer those questions for yourself. Just answer them honestly.
"Well, I'm sure homeless people don't want to be homeless." If they really didn't want to be they wouldn't be. They have made choices in their life which have gotten them to where they are. Maybe they shouldn't have started drinking. Maybe they shouldn't have started taking drugs. I know...not all homeless people are drunks or drug addicts. Maybe a few were laid off and lost their job. At some point they made the decision to give up and be homeless. It was a decision.
No matter what your situation is, you are responsible. If you are rich or poor, happy or unhappy, have the job you want or don't, or anywhere in the middle, you have made decisions that have gotten you to where you are.
So DO SOMETHING! Or don't. That is fine also. You are choosing to be where you are in life.
